ChatGPT Free and Go now offer unlimited text messaging capabilities

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT by enabling Free and Go users to engage in unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced this change will take effect next week and will be maintained with safeguards to prevent misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will also become the default model for these accounts. Additionally, free users will gain a Think button that allows the system to dedicate more time to complex queries before providing an answer.

This new feature applies solely to text chats and does not eliminate all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limitations will still be in place for file uploads, image generation, and other tools requiring extra processing. The Think feature will be introduced alongside unlimited text messaging next week, offering GPT-5.6 Luna additional reasoning time for tasks demanding more analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls on features beyond basic text conversations, including tools accessible under different usage limits.

OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 as a suite of models that includes Luna, Sol, and Terra. Luna is designed to be the faster and more economical option within this lineup. The company stated that ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion weekly users across various tasks such as searches, research, planning, writing, and more. With the recent update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. This rollout broadens access to the core chat service while maintaining specific limits on certain tools.

Enhanced reasoning models available for paid subscriptions

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro are also gaining access to an improved version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol supports quick replies as well as more in-depth reasoning within the paid tier. OpenAI mentioned that this update produces more targeted responses and minimizes unnecessary details when a simpler answer suffices. Additionally, subscribers now have a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop platforms, allowing users to control how much processing ChatGPT applies to tasks involving research, planning, coding, writing, and other activities.

The company also reported a significant drop in factual inaccuracies during internal testing of its latest models. These assessments focused on financial, medical, and legal prompts requiring detailed factual information. OpenAI stated that responses containing at least one factual error decreased by roughly 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The company further noted that Sol improved its handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when such details were critical to an answer.

Unlimited text messaging continues with safety restrictions in place

OpenAI emphasized that its latest ChatGPT models feature additional protections for users under 18. These measures aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could replace real-world relationships. They also set boundaries concerning sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted substances, and graphic violence. The company stated that new evaluations have been added for responses involving younger users. While unlimited text conversations will be available to Free and Go accounts, they will operate within the same abuse safeguards.

This update pertains mainly to the core ChatGPT experience rather than all OpenAI products utilizing GPT-5.6 models. The company clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex are unaffected by this release. Currently, paid users can access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls, while Free and Go users will receive Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited chats and the Think button will be introduced next week, with separate limits remaining on images, uploads, and other tools.
