MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation expanded by 4.3% during the first eight months of 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours compared to 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This increase of approximately 1,546.5 GWh was reflected in preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, showing gains across multiple governorates. August’s production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July, maintaining overall output above the 2025 levels.

Muscat experienced the most significant rise in total electricity output, with a year-on-year increase of 204.8%. Al Dakhiliyah also saw a strong growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s production increased by 8.4%. Regions such as North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah collectively saw a 5.5% rise, with Dhofar recording a 4.6% increase over the same period. The regional data reveal considerable variation in electricity growth, with several governorates reporting higher figures during this timeframe.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah displayed a different trend, with combined electricity production in these governorates declining by 16.4% compared to the same months of 2025. Musandam’s output was 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the previous year. Overall, the regional figures indicate increases in most areas covered by the national data, with Oman’s total electricity generation remaining above the levels seen at the same point in 2025 through August 2026. These statistics encompass the period from January to August 2026.
Electricity generation sees overall growth across Oman
Net electricity production also rose during the January to August interval, increasing by 4.6% to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This figure accounts for purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the way with a 204.4% increase in net output, followed by Al Dakhiliyah at 44.2%. Wusta and Dhofar experienced gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively, contributing to a total national increase of about 1,592.1 GWh.
North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah collectively recorded a 5.4% rise in net electricity production. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output was 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation stayed above the levels of 2025, with regional patterns reflecting the shifts seen in total output. Several governorates demonstrated increased net production during this period.
Water output declines through August 2026
During the same eight-month span, Oman’s water production decreased, falling 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from approximately 342.71 million the previous year. Water output in Muscat declined by 6.2%, totaling around 128.07 million cubic metres, compared to about 136.57 million during the same months of 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with production dropping to roughly 149.90 million cubic metres from 155.19 million in the previous year.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording an increase in water production. Its output reached about 52.68 million cubic metres, up 3.4% from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data clearly show electricity and water figures moving in different directions across Oman through August 2026. Electricity generation grew at both total and net levels, while water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s increase. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
