Hiroshima commemorates 81st anniversary of atomic bombing with renewed call for nuclear disarmament

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Hiroshima marked the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing on Thursday by reiterating its appeal to abolish nuclear weapons. Mayor Kazumi Matsui addressed survivors, families, government officials, and international delegates at the city’s Peace Memorial Park. At 8:15 a.m., a bell sounded to honor the moment when the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Following the toll, attendees observed a minute of silence to remember those impacted by the attack and its aftermath.

Hiroshima marks 81st bomb anniversary with disarmament plea
Hiroshima’s anniversary keeps nuclear disarmament and survivor testimony in global focus.

During Hiroshima’s annual Peace Declaration, Matsui challenged the ongoing dependence on nuclear deterrence. He called on political leaders from nuclear-armed nations to acknowledge the humanitarian toll of atomic weapons and to push for disarmament. The mayor also urged policymakers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hear directly from hibakusha, the survivors of the two bombings. For decades, Hiroshima has prioritized survivor testimonies and nuclear abolition as core elements of its annual remembrance and global peace initiatives.

Approximately 50,000 people participated in the ceremony, alongside representatives from 121 countries and regions, including European Union. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended Hiroshima’s memorial for the first time in her role as Japan’s prime minister. She affirmed Japan’s pursuit of a pragmatic path toward a future where nuclear weapons are never used. Takaichi also emphasized the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a vital framework for disarmament and reiterated Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

Nuclear diplomacy continues to face challenges

The event followed the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, which concluded in May without reaching an agreement on a substantive final document. This marked the third consecutive NPT review conference to end without consensus. Matsui highlighted the international climate while urging governments to bolster efforts toward nuclear disarmament. Although Japan supports the NPT framework, it has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and remains protected under the United States nuclear umbrella as part of their security alliance.

During the Hiroshima ceremony, the United Nations conveyed a message from Secretary-General António Guterres, read by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu. Guterres pointed out the widening geopolitical divisions, growing mistrust, and renewed demands on longstanding nuclear arms control efforts. He also mentioned that decades of reductions in nuclear arsenals have started to reverse. The UN urged increased diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral cooperation to advance nuclear disarmament.

The legacy of hibakusha remains central to Hiroshima’s identity

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, whose average age now surpasses 86. As their numbers decline, there is an increasing sense of urgency to preserve firsthand accounts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Survivors have spent decades sharing their experiences of the explosions, fires, and radiation, advocating for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Children representing Hiroshima also participated in Thursday’s event, reaffirming their commitment to peace. The city continues to uphold survivor testimonies through memorial programs, museums, and educational initiatives.

By the end of 1945, the Hiroshima bombing had resulted in approximately 140,000 deaths. Three days later, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, causing roughly 70,000 fatalities by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, with World War II ending formally in September. Hiroshima later established Peace Memorial Park as a hub for remembrance and peace education. Now, 81 years after the attack, the city emphasizes nuclear abolition and the human toll of atomic warfare as key messages.
