Egypt’s Foreign Currency Reserves Hit New High of $57.2 Billion

CAIRO, EGYPT / RankWire.AI / – By the end of August 2026, Egypt’s net international reserves stood at a record $57.2145 billion. The Central Bank of Egypt announced this preliminary figure on September 7. Reserves had been $56.2939 billion at the close of July. The monthly rise was approximately $920.6 million, or 1.6%, marking Egypt’s first time surpassing the $57 billion mark in official reserve holdings.

Egypt foreign reserves rise to record $57.2 billion
Egypt’s foreign reserve stock rose for an eighth straight month in August 2026.

This August figure also continues an upward trend observed throughout 2026. Egypt began the year with reserves totaling $52.5938 billion in January, which grew to $52.7455 billion in February and then to $52.8306 billion in March. The reserve total further increased to $53.0092 billion in April and $53.1342 billion in May. By August, reserves had grown roughly $4.62 billion since January, and approximately $5.76 billion from the end of December 2025.

The pace of growth picked up mid-year. Reserves climbed from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. An additional increase brought it to $56.2939 billion in July, culminating in the August record. These three consecutive monthly gains added over $4 billion to the reserves. Compared to August 2025, the latest figure is about $7.96 billion higher, representing a yearly growth rate of roughly 16.2%.

Remittance inflows contribute to foreign currency reserves

Remittances sent by Egyptians abroad reached an all-time high during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, with the Central Bank of Egypt reporting inflows of approximately $47.3 billion. This is a significant increase from around $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, equating to a 29.6% rise. In June alone, remittances hit about $4.2 billion, a monthly increase of 15.6% compared to roughly $3.6 billion in June 2025.

Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures cover the first nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026. During July to March, the overall balance showed a deficit of $1.8 billion, while the capital and financial account recorded net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account, on the other hand, registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These data provide the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external finances prior to the August reserve update.

Continuous monthly reserve increases persist into 2026

Throughout 2026, Egypt’s reserve figures have set successive record highs. The holdings crossed $55 billion in June, moved above $56 billion in July, and in August, recorded the first figure above $57 billion. The country has now posted three straight month-end reserve totals exceeding $55 billion. The August total also surpasses December 2025’s $51.4516 billion by more than 10%. The latest data indicate Egypt’s net international reserves have reached their highest ever recorded level, with an unbroken upward trend from January through August. Every month’s reserve total has been higher than the previous one. Although the August figure remains provisional as per the central bank’s reporting, the available data clearly shows a steady increase in Egypt’s reserve stock during the first eight months of 2026.
