South Korea’s Foreign Reserves Surge to $442.28 Billion in August

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – At the end of August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves reached a record-high monthly increase, totaling $442.28 billion. The Bank of Korea announced a rise of $14.33 billion from $427.95 billion at the close of July. This increase marked the largest since official reserve data collection began in 1971 and pushed the country’s holdings to their highest level since May 2022, showing a rapid acceleration compared to the modest gains of the previous two months.

South Korea foreign reserves reach $442.28 billion in August
South Korea recorded its largest monthly increase in foreign exchange reserves in August.

South Korea’s reserves have grown for three consecutive months, after increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August boost also surpassed the previous monthly record of $14.29 billion, set in May 2009. Despite this latest rise, total reserves still remain below the all-time peak of $469.21 billion recorded in October 2021. The figures reflect assets available within the nation’s official foreign exchange reserves and are denominated in U.S. dollars.

The Bank of Korea linked the August increase to higher foreign currency deposits, returns from reserve asset management, and exchange rate fluctuations. Movements in currency values can influence the dollar value of holdings in euros, pounds, and other currencies. When reporting total reserves, the central bank converts these holdings into U.S. dollars. Consequently, fluctuations in major exchange rates can inflate or deflate the reported reserve totals, even if the underlying foreign currency assets stay consistent within the same portfolio.

Securities and deposits dominate August’s growth

Foreign securities continue to be the largest element of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves. Their value increased by $7.07 billion in August, reaching $387.07 billion, which makes up 87.5% of the total reserves. This category encompasses government and corporate securities held among official reserve assets. Foreign currency deposits also experienced a significant rise, climbing by $7.17 billion to $30.30 billion, representing a substantial share of the overall increase along with the growth in foreign securities.

Other reserve components showed smaller variations. Special drawing rights increased by $60 million to $15.77 billion, while the country’s reserve position was roughly $4.34 billion. Gold holdings stayed unchanged at $4.79 billion. The combined growth in securities and foreign currency deposits made up nearly all of the $14.33 billion monthly increase. The reserve composition remains heavily weighted toward securities, although deposits posted one of the largest increases among individual components during August.

Reserves reach highest point since May 2022

The August reserve total marked South Korea’s highest level in over four years. Reserves last exceeded this figure in May 2022, when they peaked at $447.71 billion. The August figure also narrowed the gap with the record level set in October 2021. Official foreign exchange reserves include securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the country’s reserve position in the international monetary system. These figures are published monthly as part of the country’s routine reporting on external financial assets.

The latest data indicate a notable shift in the pace of reserve growth during the summer months. June and July saw modest increases, but August delivered a record monthly jump. By the end of August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves totaled $442.28 billion, nearly $14.3 billion more than at the end of July. While still below the all-time high, this is the highest level since May 2022, driven by gains in securities, foreign currency deposits, and the dollar valuation of selected reserve assets.
