According to Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta, the number of ships passing through could decrease to approximately 29 per day in February or March 2027. Any additional cutback will depend on persistent dry weather and reservoir levels. The waterway is already on track to limit transits to 32 daily crossings starting September 15.
Following below-average rainfall and watershed inflows during the rainy season, the Panama Canal Authority has begun capacity reductions. Initially, daily crossings decreased from their usual levels to 34 before the planned drop to 32. The canal relies on freshwater stored in Gatun Lake and Alhajuela Lake to operate its locks, with each transit consuming water needed to move vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Throughout fiscal year 2026, the canal averaged 35 transits per day up to June 30. Between October and June, the canal recorded 10,726 crossings, reflecting a 5.2% rise compared to the same period last year. These figures predate the worsening drought conditions, which have led to new operational restrictions. Despite these challenges, the canal remains a vital route for container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and other vessels supporting international trade.
Reservoir water levels influence daily transit capacity
The amount of water available has historically dictated how many ships can cross the canal during dry periods. During the severe drought in 2023, daily transits dropped to 22 in December when Gatun Lake levels plummeted to unusually low points. Conditions improved once rainfall resumed, aided by water conservation efforts that helped reservoirs recover. Canal authorities continue to monitor lake levels, watershed inflows, and rainfall to determine daily operational capacity.
In response to current water management, officials have also modified vessel draft rules. A proposed reduction in Neopanamax draft to 47.5 feet was suspended after reevaluating reservoir conditions, and the maximum draft remained at 48 feet. Draft limits influence how deeply a loaded vessel sits in the water, impacting cargo capacity during transit through the canal.
Booking procedures tighten as transit slots decrease
With fewer daily transit slots available, the canal has updated its booking and auction procedures. Auction categories now differentiate vessels based on cargo type, including container ships, gas carriers, tankers, and bulk vessels. Priority in some Neopanamax allocations is given to full container ships with higher cargo capacity when other factors are equal. Canal officials also promote the use of the booking system to vessels without reservations, as confirmed bookings guarantee scheduled transit dates.
There has been no official announcement regarding a potential reduction in traffic to 29 ships per day. Espino de Marotta mentioned that such a limit could be implemented if drought conditions persist into early 2027. Additionally, the canal is progressing with the Río Indio reservoir project aimed at increasing long-term water storage capacity. Officials state that the initiative will support canal operations while also bolstering water supply for a significant portion of Panama’s population.
