Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Shakes Balochistan in Pakistan on October 17

KHUZDAR, Pakistan / AsiaWire.IO / – A seismic event measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Saturday, October 17, with its epicenter near Khuzdar. The German Research Centre for Geosciences recorded the quake, noting it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, or 6 miles. Earthquakes at such shallow depths tend to produce more intense ground shaking than those occurring at greater depths of similar magnitude. Early reports did not specify any casualties or damage.

The GFZ, based in Potsdam, Germany, offers swift assessments of major earthquakes worldwide. Its initial data on magnitude and depth can be refined as more seismic information becomes available. Saturday’s figures served as the primary reference for early reports on the incident. Khuzdar is situated centrally within Balochistan, which is Pakistan’s largest province by land area. Authorities had yet to release detailed information regarding the quake’s impact in initial updates.

Balochistan lies in a seismically active zone along the southern boundary of the Eurasian plate. The Indian plate converges at an oblique angle with the Eurasian plate along Pakistan’s western border. The region features major fault systems such as the Chaman Fault, a left-lateral strike-slip fault, and the Sulaiman fold and thrust belt. The strain accumulated along these tectonic features has been responsible for some of the most devastating earthquakes in Pakistan’s history.

Fault zones contribute to Balochistan’s vulnerability to major quakes

Historically, significant earthquakes have struck the region, including the 1935 Quetta quake with a magnitude of 7.7, which resulted in an estimated 30,000 to 60,000 fatalities. A decade later, an 8.1 magnitude quake off the Makran coast triggered a tsunami that caused about 4,000 deaths. The 2008 Ziarat earthquake, measuring 6.4, claimed 215 lives. In 2013, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake centered in Awaran District, adjacent to Khuzdar, led to 825 deaths and around 700 injuries.

On October 7, 2021, a destructive magnitude 5.9 quake struck Harnai District, killing at least 42 people, many of whom were women and children. Approximately 300 individuals were injured, and nearly 10,000 mud homes were destroyed. Satellite imagery revealed over 100 landslides following the tremor, which obstructed roads and hampered rescue efforts.

Ongoing seismic activity highlights ongoing risks

In 2026, Pakistan has experienced several notable tremors. A magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan near Sost in August, while a 6.2 magnitude quake centered in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush affected the region in April. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are positioned on the Eurasian plate, whereas Sindh and Punjab lie on the Indian plate, exposing Pakistan to seismic hazards from its northern mountains to the southwestern coast.

Moderate earthquakes within the 5 to 6 magnitude range can cause damage to vulnerable structures near the epicenter. Shallow seismic events are often followed by aftershocks, as seen after the 2021 Harnai quake, which experienced aftershocks of magnitude 4.6 and 4.5. The initial reports from Saturday’s earthquake did not mention any aftershocks. Further details are anticipated as local authorities evaluate the situation around Khuzdar.
