Malaysia Enhances National Preparedness for El Niño Impact

    July 20, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia’s Alliance for a Safe Community has emphasized the need for proactive, coordinated measures as El Niño intensifies across the Pacific region. Chairman Lee Lam Thye stated that readiness efforts should prioritize public health, water supply, agriculture, and environmental protection. He called on authorities, businesses, and local communities to act promptly to mitigate the effects of hotter and drier conditions that could strain critical services. This appeal comes in light of recent climate evaluations indicating that the event has already reached a moderate strength.

Malaysia strengthens El Niño readiness nationwide
Malaysia expands El Niño readiness across water, health, farming and fire safety.

MetMalaysia announced on July 14 that El Niño conditions are currently moderate and are expected to persist until at least April 2027. The latest analysis revealed a weekly sea surface temperature anomaly of 1.3 degrees Celsius in the Niño 3.4 zone. The agency projected that the event could intensify from October through December 2026, with the possibility of strong or “Super” El Niño episodes during this period. It advised the public to stay informed through official updates.

Malaysia’s forecast for July to December indicates a likelihood of below-average or slightly below-average rainfall in various regions. The most significant reductions are expected during July and August, when the southwest monsoon typically results in drier conditions. Several areas in southern Peninsular Malaysia, central and western Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are predicted to experience lower rainfall. The forecast also associates drier weather and unchecked open burning with an increased haze risk.

Water resource and heat mitigation strategies

The National Disaster Management Agency has expanded its preparations for the hot and dry conditions linked to El Niño. Since February, it has conducted seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Three additional cloud seeding series are scheduled to help maintain rainfall and reservoir levels in vulnerable areas. Fire and environmental teams have also been instructed to monitor 83 sites at high risk of open burning.

The government has directed water authorities to identify dams requiring urgent repairs and to evaluate more groundwater sources for tube wells. Health and education departments are scaling up public advisories aimed at vulnerable groups and school communities. The safety coalition has recommended measures such as reducing pipeline losses, increasing storage capacity, and developing contingency plans for regions at risk of shortages. They also advocate for efficient irrigation practices, technical support for farmers, and stronger enforcement against forest and peatland fires.

    Public advisories and government oversight

Lee highlighted that vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses need special attention. He also urged broader awareness campaigns on water conservation, fire prevention, and heat illness protection. Citizens are encouraged to rely on official weather updates, including the myCuaca application, for real-time alerts and local weather conditions. Authorities continue to monitor and assess heat, drought, rainfall, air quality, and fire risks nationwide.

According to NOAA’s July report, there is a 97% likelihood that El Niño will persist into early 2027. The probability of a very strong event occurring between October and December is placed at 81%. Malaysia’s official outlook also notes that thunderstorms and heavy rain may still occur during the southwest monsoon. Government efforts are now focused on water supply management, fire prevention, public health messaging, weather surveillance, and inter-agency coordination. These measures remain aligned with the latest forecasts and verified climate data.
