NEW DELHI, INDIA / MENA Newswire / – India and Japan broadened their Special Strategic and Global Partnership at the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi, adding cooperation in artificial intelligence, economic security, energy resilience, defence and mobility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae during her official visit from July 1 to 3. Japan’s delegation included senior officials, chief executives and industry leaders.

PM Modi leads India-Japan summit talks focused on AI, economic security and energy resilience.

The summit produced 16 listed outcomes across government, business, finance, science and technology. The two governments identified three main areas of work: defence and security, economic partnership, and people-to-people exchanges. The economic track covered supply chains, clean energy, technology, innovation and critical sectors. The leaders also reviewed progress since the 15th annual summit and reaffirmed the role of the annual mechanism in bilateral cooperation.

India and Japan adopted a joint declaration on economic security. It promotes project-based work in semiconductors, critical minerals, information and communication technology, clean energy and pharmaceuticals. The declaration also covers government and business engagement in these fields. Both sides agreed to continue consultations on high technology trade, export control issues and supply-chain resilience.

    Economic security widens

The two countries also adopted a joint statement on artificial intelligence cooperation. It elevates India-Japan AI ties into a strategic research and development partnership. The roadmap covers AI governance, safety, cybersecurity, data centers, compute resources, semiconductors and multilingual models. It also supports work on open-source, domain-specific and public interest AI systems, including models for native languages.

Several AI-linked arrangements formed part of the outcome list. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, BharatGen Technology Foundation and Japan’s National Institute of Informatics signed an agreement on large language model research. SarvamAI and Preferred Networks signed a framework covering the AI technology stack. IndiaAI Mission and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry also agreed to institutional cooperation, including business matching and access to computing resources.

    Energy and mobility ties deepen

Energy cooperation formed another major part of the summit package. A joint statement between India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry focuses on crude oil and petroleum product reserves. The two sides also agreed to work on strategic stockpiling systems and joint investment across the maritime energy transport value chain. A separate biogas initiative supports India’s goal of 1,000 biogas and organic fertilizer plants.

The outcome list also included agreements on batteries, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, geology, mineral exploration, internet registry operations, financial services and next generation mobility. The mobility framework covers rail, automotive, roads, aviation, shipbuilding, ports, logistics and urban development. The leaders also reaffirmed the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail as a flagship project and noted India’s target to begin commercial operations on priority sections in 2027.
