José Kast takes office as Chile’s new president in March

SANTIAGO, Dec 16, 2025: Chile has elected José Antonio Kast as president, marking a significant political shift toward the right in the South American nation. Kast, leader of the Republican Party, won the presidency in Sunday’s runoff election with 58 percent of the vote against leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 42 percent, according to official results released by Chile’s Electoral Service. The victory gives Kast a clear mandate following a campaign centered on restoring public security, controlling migration, and implementing fiscal discipline. His triumph represents one of the strongest showings for a conservative candidate since Chile’s return to democracy in 1990. Voter turnout was estimated at more than 8.2 million, or about 61 percent of the electorate, underscoring the high stakes of the contest after an evenly divided first round last month.

José Kast takes office as Chile’s new president in March
Chile prepares for leadership change under José Kast’s new government.

Kast, 59, will succeed President Gabriel Boric when he takes office on March 11, 2026, for a four-year term. The outgoing president congratulated Kast and pledged a transparent transition process. In remarks following his victory, Kast thanked voters for their support and emphasized unity, saying the country “has chosen order, stability and progress.” The president-elect, a lawyer and former congressman, is known for his conservative positions on social and economic issues. He campaigned on a promise to strengthen police powers, reduce violent crime, and secure Chile’s northern border, which has faced an increase in irregular migration in recent years. Kast also pledged to promote economic growth by encouraging private investment and streamlining public spending, arguing that Chile must “recover confidence” in its institutions and economy.

While the Republican Party now occupies a pivotal role in national politics, it does not hold an absolute majority in Congress. The new administration will likely need to negotiate with centrist and moderate-right lawmakers to pass major legislation. Political observers note that the composition of the legislature could influence the pace of policy implementation, requiring cooperation across party lines to advance key reforms. Kast’s victory concludes a heated election cycle that reflected widespread public concern over crime, inflation, and social stability. Chile’s economy, one of Latin America’s strongest, has experienced slower growth and higher living costs in recent years. Analysts say these challenges, coupled with dissatisfaction over security conditions, shaped voter preferences across multiple regions, including metropolitan Santiago and northern border provinces.

National unity central to Chile’s political transition

The election outcome positions Chile among several Latin American nations where conservative leadership has recently gained ground through electoral processes emphasizing order and governance. Kast’s administration will face immediate domestic priorities, including economic recovery, addressing migration pressures, and managing relations with neighboring countries. International leaders, including those from the United States and several Latin American governments, congratulated Kast on his election and expressed interest in maintaining cooperative ties on trade, investment, and security. Regional markets responded moderately to the result, with the Chilean peso strengthening slightly in early trading on Monday, reflecting investor confidence in policy continuity and fiscal restraint.

Chilean voters express confidence in conservative leadership

José Antonio Kast’s inauguration in March will open a new chapter in Chile’s post-democratic era, marking the first right-wing presidency in nearly a decade. His administration’s effectiveness will depend on legislative consensus and its ability to balance public expectations with the country’s economic and social realities. As Chile enters this new political phase, the leadership transition underscores the electorate’s preference for stability and governance after years of political polarization and public unrest. Kast is expected to focus on rebuilding investor confidence, improving public safety, and addressing long-standing social challenges that have defined recent political debates. The new government will also face the task of navigating Chile’s constitutional and economic reforms, ensuring continuity in democratic institutions while responding to citizens’ demand for greater accountability and growth. – By Content Syndication Services.
