MENA Newswire, ABU DHABI: President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday conferred the Order of Zayed, the United Arab Emirates’ highest civilian honour, on Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, marking a high level diplomatic moment in the development of relations between the two countries. The award was presented during an official ceremony in Abu Dhabi held as part of the Albanian prime minister’s visit to the UAE, attended by senior officials and members of both delegations.

The Order of Zayed is awarded to heads of state, leaders, and senior figures in recognition of their contributions to strengthening relations with the UAE or advancing cooperation in humanitarian and development fields. UAE officials said the honour reflected the steady expansion of ties with Albania, supported by sustained political dialogue and cooperation across economic and institutional sectors over recent years.

During the meeting accompanying the ceremony, the two leaders reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and discussed areas of cooperation. Officials said the talks covered economic relations, investment, renewable energy, infrastructure, tourism, and food security. The discussions also addressed mechanisms for strengthening coordination between government institutions and supporting existing partnerships involving public and private sector entities.

Prime Minister Rama expressed his appreciation for the award and conveyed his thanks to the UAE leadership. He noted that the honour reflected the relationship between Albania and the UAE and the shared commitment to cooperation. Albanian officials said the visit provided an opportunity to reaffirm engagement with Emirati partners and to review progress on projects linked to economic development and investment.

    Economic ties underpin bilateral engagement

Economic cooperation has emerged as a central pillar of UAE Albania relations. Emirati investments in Albania have expanded in sectors including energy, real estate, tourism, and infrastructure, supported by bilateral agreements and investment frameworks. Albanian authorities have identified the UAE as an important investment partner, particularly in projects aligned with national development priorities and long term economic growth.

Renewable energy featured prominently in the discussions, with officials reviewing cooperation in solar and wind projects. Both sides noted that energy collaboration forms part of broader sustainability objectives and efforts to diversify energy sources. Talks also included digital infrastructure and logistics, areas seen as supporting economic efficiency and regional connectivity, according to officials briefed on the meetings.

Beyond economic issues, the two leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments. They underscored the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation through international institutions. Officials said the discussions reflected shared positions on the value of multilateral engagement, without announcements of new initiatives following the talks.

Order of Zayed marks diplomatic milestone

The conferral of the Order of Zayed was described by officials as a symbolic milestone in UAE Albania relations. The honour has been awarded to a number of international leaders whose engagement has contributed to closer ties with the UAE. In this context, officials said the award recognised the trajectory of bilateral relations, characterised by regular high level exchanges and expanding cooperation.

UAE Albania relations have developed steadily over the past decade through diplomatic engagement, economic partnerships, and people to people exchanges. High level visits and formal agreements have provided a framework for cooperation, while private sector engagement has supported trade and investment links between the two countries.

The ceremony concluded Prime Minister Rama’s official engagement in Abu Dhabi. Officials from both sides said the visit reaffirmed existing cooperation frameworks and ongoing coordination through diplomatic channels. The awarding of the Order of Zayed underscored the UAE’s practice of recognising international partners and reinforcing bilateral ties as part of its broader foreign relations agenda.
