Twelve killed in residential building fire in southern China

BEIJING, December 11, 2025: Twelve people were killed after a fire swept through a residential building in the southern Chinese city of Shantou on Tuesday night, according to local authorities. The incident, which occurred in Guangdong province, has drawn national attention as emergency services work to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Officials said the fire broke out at approximately 9:20 p.m. local time (1320 GMT) in a four-storey residential building. Firefighters arrived swiftly at the scene and managed to extinguish the flames about 40 minutes later.

Despite their efforts, all twelve victims were found dead inside the building. No additional injuries or missing persons were reported as of Wednesday morning. The affected structure, located in a densely populated area of Shantou, housed multiple families. Rescue personnel completed a full search of the premises overnight to confirm that all residents had been accounted for. Authorities have since cordoned off the site to allow fire and safety investigators to conduct a detailed inspection of the scene.

Local emergency management teams, alongside provincial fire safety officials, have begun an investigation into the origin and spread of the fire. Initial findings indicate that the blaze began on one of the lower floors before engulfing the upper levels, though the precise cause remains under examination. Officials have not yet provided details regarding the victims’ identities or the extent of structural damage to the building. City authorities have pledged support for the families of the deceased and stated that temporary assistance and counseling services will be made available.

Investigation underway to determine the origin of the blaze

The municipal government also announced that fire safety checks would be reinforced across residential districts to prevent similar tragedies. Firefighters and safety inspectors have been deployed to assess older buildings in Shantou and surrounding areas, ensuring compliance with emergency standards. China has experienced a series of fatal residential fires in recent years, many linked to aging infrastructure and high population density in older urban neighborhoods. The government has been working to strengthen fire prevention protocols and improve rapid response systems across provincial cities.

Local officials in Shantou reiterated that community awareness campaigns and inspections remain a top priority for municipal safety programs. State media footage on Wednesday showed rows of fire engines and emergency vehicles positioned outside the building as smoke continued to rise from the site late into the night. Firefighters were seen removing debris and securing the area while investigators examined structural remains for evidence that could explain how the fire spread so quickly.

National media highlight renewed focus on safety standards

Authorities confirmed that the fire was fully extinguished before midnight and that there was no further risk to nearby residents. Power and gas supplies to the surrounding area were temporarily suspended during the emergency response and have since been restored. Cleanup operations continued into Wednesday morning as forensic and safety teams conducted final assessments. The Shantou city government expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and commended the emergency crews for their rapid deployment.

Officials emphasized that all findings from the investigation will be made public once completed. The incident serves as a reminder of the continued importance of enforcing fire safety regulations in high-density residential areas across south China. – By Content Syndication Services.
