Indonesia to buy 200 helicopters to boost defense and relief

JAKARTA, December 7, 2025: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced an ambitious plan to acquire up to 200 helicopters beginning next year, a move aimed at bolstering both Indonesia’s defense capabilities and its national disaster response system. The announcement, reported by Indonesia’s state news agency ANTARA, underscores the government’s intent to enhance air mobility and operational readiness amid frequent natural disasters across the archipelago. Speaking at the Golkar Party’s 61st anniversary celebration in Jakarta on Friday, President Prabowo emphasized that the initiative reflects Indonesia’s urgent need to prepare for crises in a country situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Indonesia plans to purchase 200 helicopters to boost defense and disaster readiness.

The president highlighted ongoing emergency responses to widespread floods and landslides in Sumatra as a reminder of the nation’s vulnerability. “We have just received five new helicopters this week, and the number will continue to increase,” Prabowo said. “I have ordered my aides to procure 200 helicopters starting January next year.” He expressed condolences to the families affected by recent disasters and reiterated that Indonesia’s strength lies in unity, resilience, and the ability to mobilize swiftly when faced with adversity. According to Prabowo, 50 helicopters have already been deployed to deliver food, medical supplies, and rescue teams to flood-hit areas.

He said the new procurement drive aims to significantly increase the country’s airlift capacity, ensuring faster response times during emergencies. The aircraft will also enhance Indonesia’s defense operations, including surveillance, logistics, and troop transport, in support of the nation’s strategic objectives. Defending the large-scale procurement, Prabowo said it was a necessary investment in national security and humanitarian readiness. “Indonesia is a disaster-prone nation. We must be prepared not only to deter threats but also to respond rapidly to any emergency that affects our people,” he said. “A strong air capability is vital for both defense and saving lives.”

The president added that modernizing the helicopter fleet would ensure that Indonesia’s armed forces could provide continuous assistance in relief operations across its thousands of islands. The government is expected to coordinate the acquisition through the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), with potential involvement of both domestic manufacturers and foreign suppliers. While details regarding the cost, procurement timeline, and technical specifications have not yet been released, officials indicated that the program will include multi-purpose and transport helicopters capable of operating in remote and rugged terrain.

Prabowo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding the use of defense assets for civil protection. He noted that the TNI has consistently played a critical role in search and rescue missions, medical evacuations, and logistics support during natural disasters. The planned procurement, he said, would help integrate military and civilian efforts under a single coordinated framework to improve national preparedness. Analysts in Jakarta view the helicopter acquisition as a strategic effort to modernize Indonesia’s defense infrastructure while reinforcing domestic resilience.

Integrating military and civilian emergency operations

The initiative aligns with Prabowo’s broader defense modernization plan, which seeks to upgrade air and maritime capabilities through a mix of international partnerships and local production. It also reflects Indonesia’s growing focus on self-reliance in defense technology, with plans to involve state-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia in assembling and maintaining part of the fleet. Government officials have hinted that the procurement could include cooperation with major global manufacturers from Europe, the United States, and Asia, ensuring technology transfers and training for Indonesian personnel.

With the country frequently confronting earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and severe flooding, the new fleet is expected to play a pivotal role in both security operations and humanitarian relief for years to come, strengthening national resilience and ensuring that vital aid, rescue teams, and medical assistance can reach even the most isolated communities swiftly during times of crisis. The helicopters will also enhance coordination between military and civil agencies, improving logistics efficiency and emergency response across Indonesia’s vast archipelago. – By Content Syndication Services.
