Egypt and Syria agree on natural gas and petroleum exports

MENA Newswire, CAIRO: Egypt has signed two memoranda of understanding with Syria to export natural gas and petroleum products, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said on Monday. The agreements, concluded between the petroleum ministries of both countries, set out a framework for energy supply and technical cooperation using Egypt’s existing infrastructure and operational capabilities.

Egypt and Syria agree on natural gas and petroleum exports
Energy agreements support gas exports and fuel supply between Egypt and Syria.

According to the ministry, one memorandum covers the supply of natural gas to Syria for electricity generation. The gas will be delivered through Egypt’s established systems, including floating storage and regasification units and the national gas transmission network. These facilities allow Egypt to receive liquefied natural gas, regasify it, and transport it through pipelines for domestic use or export. The ministry did not disclose volumes, pricing terms, or the duration of the supply arrangement.

Egypt operates floating regasification units that form part of its broader gas infrastructure, which includes onshore processing plants and an extensive pipeline network. The ministry said these assets will be utilized to support deliveries to Syria without the need for new large scale infrastructure projects. Technical coordination between the two sides will be required to ensure compatibility of systems and operational procedures.

The second memorandum addresses Syria’s demand for petroleum products. The ministry said discussions focused on supplying refined fuels required for electricity generation and other essential uses. No details were provided on the specific products, quantities, or delivery mechanisms. The memorandum establishes a basis for continued coordination between the two petroleum ministries to assess requirements and logistical arrangements.

In addition to supply agreements, the memoranda include provisions for cooperation in rehabilitating Syria’s gas and petroleum infrastructure. Egypt is expected to provide technical expertise in areas such as facility assessment, maintenance planning, and operational support. The ministry said this cooperation would draw on Egypt’s experience in managing gas production, processing, and distribution systems. Any technical assistance would be carried out under separate arrangements agreed by both sides.

Egypt Syria energy agreements outline gas and fuel supply framework

The ministry said the agreements form part of Egypt’s ongoing regional energy cooperation efforts. Over recent years, Egypt has expanded its natural gas production and invested in liquefied natural gas facilities, transmission pipelines, and storage capacity. These developments have enabled the country to receive, process, and distribute gas for domestic consumption and regional markets.

Egypt has also entered into energy related agreements with other countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ministry said recent accords with Lebanon and Cyprus are aimed at expanding gas exports and improving connectivity between regional energy networks. These arrangements focus on utilizing existing infrastructure and coordinating technical standards to facilitate cross border energy flows.

The ministry described the memoranda with Syria as framework agreements that require further technical and administrative steps before implementation. These steps include assessments of infrastructure readiness, alignment of operational standards, and completion of regulatory and commercial procedures. No timeline was provided for the start of natural gas or petroleum product deliveries.

Agreements align with existing regional energy accords

Egypt and Syria have maintained diplomatic and economic relations that previously included cooperation in the energy sector. The ministry said communication between the two governments has continued on practical areas of cooperation, with joint technical committees expected to oversee implementation of the memoranda once detailed arrangements are finalized.

The ministry added that all activities under the agreements will be conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and technical standards. It said further announcements would be made as implementation progresses, without providing additional details on next steps or schedules or confirming specific timelines for execution.
