PM Modi urges BRICS to invest in people-centric health innovation

Brazil has formally submitted a proposal to the New Development Bank (NDB) of BRICS countries for the development of its first smart public hospital within the Unified Health System (SUS). The project, announced by Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is designed to establish a state-of-the-art healthcare facility integrating advanced technologies, with a primary focus on emergency care, intensive care units, and neurology services.

The smart hospital will feature artificial intelligence systems for diagnostics and prognostics, telemedicine platforms for remote consultations, 5G-enabled ambulances, and automated management systems aimed at improving efficiency and patient outcomes. The total investment in the project is estimated at US$320 million, with the hospital covering an area of 150,000 square metres.

The facility will adhere to international standards of sustainability, safety, and innovation. Brazil is collaborating with the University of São Paulo on the development, while China is providing technical support in implementing the hospital’s advanced infrastructure. During the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of the smart hospital project as an example of how BRICS nations can harness technology to transform public healthcare systems.

Modi emphasizes inclusive development and health innovation at BRICS

In his address, PM Modi emphasized the importance of aligning multilateral development efforts with the needs of the Global South, calling for inclusive and demand-driven financing models that support large-scale public welfare initiatives. Modi underscored the necessity of using BRICS platforms to foster collaborative innovations, particularly in healthcare, scientific research, and technology transfer.

He urged the NDB to prioritize projects that directly enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency, citing Brazil’s smart hospital as a model of integrated, people-centric infrastructure. The Indian Prime Minister also proposed the establishment of a BRICS research repository to facilitate joint innovation in sectors such as health technology, biotechnology, and climate resilience.

Addressing broader concerns of economic security and technological autonomy, Modi called for strengthening supply chains for critical minerals and advanced technologies to safeguard member nations against external pressures. He stressed the importance of collective action in establishing transparent and resilient networks for the exchange of essential resources and technology components.

Ethical AI standards top Modi’s BRICS healthcare technology agenda

On the topic of artificial intelligence, Modi advocated for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while ensuring ethical oversight. He encouraged BRICS nations to develop common standards for AI governance and invited member countries to participate in India’s upcoming summit dedicated to responsible AI practices.

New Development Bank President Dilma Rousseff described the Brazil smart hospital project as a forward-looking initiative that embodies the future of global public health, driven by international cooperation and technological advancements. She remarked that such projects exemplify how BRICS countries can collaborate to translate scientific progress into practical solutions that directly benefit their populations.

Other BRICS nations are also advancing smart healthcare initiatives. Egypt has implemented a digital platform for hospital equipment planning, designed to improve cost efficiency by automating equipment lists based on facility requirements. In India, a leading clinic has introduced AI-driven cancer detection systems capable of identifying serious illnesses years before symptoms appear. – By Content Syndication Services.
