India basmati exporter lands 5,000-tonne U.S. order

NEW DELHI: An Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation member company has finalized a commercial agreement to supply 5,000 tonnes of Indian basmati rice to a buyer in the United States, the federation said in a statement issued this week. The federation did not identify the exporter or the U.S. buyer, and it did not disclose the contract value, delivery schedule, shipping route, or port details.

India basmati exports in focus after IREF reports 5,000 tonne U.S. supply deal.

The federation said the agreement covers “premium” Indian basmati rice and described it as a bilateral trade development tied to recent India United States trade facilitation measures. It said its members were being urged to maintain quality standards and comply with international norms, including food safety and phytosanitary requirements, as well as traceability and responsible sourcing practices.

Basmati rice is a high value, aromatic variety that India exports widely, with shipments spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. A July 2025 market note published by APEDA’s Market Intelligence Cell said the United States represented about 4% to 5% of India’s basmati rice exports, totaling about 2.6 lakh metric tonnes in calendar year 2024.

The announcement follows a broader shift in the trade backdrop between New Delhi and Washington. The White House said in February that the United States would lower its reciprocal tariff rate on originating goods of India to 18% from 25% under an executive order framework, and it described additional tariff changes as part of an interim trade understanding. The official documents did not single out rice, but the rice industry has pointed to overall tariff conditions as a factor in export competitiveness.

    Basmati exports and market position

India is the leading global exporter of basmati rice, according to APEDA, the government backed body that tracks agricultural exports. APEDA said India exported 6,065,483.45 metric tonnes of basmati rice worldwide in the 2024 to 2025 fiscal year, valued at 50,312.01 crore rupees, or $5,944.42 million. APEDA listed Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen among the major destinations in that period.

Government market updates have also tracked pricing and policy factors affecting basmati trade flows. APEDA’s Market Intelligence Cell has reported that a minimum export price on basmati rice was removed in September 2024, and its periodic dashboards have published benchmark export price indicators for key basmati varieties. In a November 2025 dashboard, the cell said India’s Pusa basmati export price averaged about $925 per metric tonne in that month, reflecting its reported market conditions at the time.

U.S. import profile and disclosed deal details

APEDA’s July 2025 market note included an analysis of U.S. basmati imports that placed India’s share at 89% and Pakistan’s share at 7% in the segment it tracked, alongside average export price comparisons. The same note listed a 50% U.S. tariff on Indian basmati at the time of the analysis and showed how an average export price of $875 per metric tonne would translate to an effective landed price of about $1,313 per metric tonne under that tariff rate, based on a direct tariff add on.

The Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation did not provide product specifications beyond describing the shipment as premium basmati, and it did not say whether the 5,000 tonnes would move as a single lot or multiple consignments. The federation also did not release documentation on quality grade, packaging format, or compliance certifications tied to the contract.

The federation is headquartered in New Delhi and was established in 2023 as a national trade body representing Indian rice exporters. In its statement on the U.S. order, the federation reiterated its focus on export quality controls and compliance standards while confirming the commercial agreement for 5,000 tonnes of basmati rice destined for the United States. – By Content Syndication Services.
